Welcome Back!

I am so excited to be starting the school year with students back in the art studio!

It was very challenging offering choice in art via zoom last year and most of the time I wasn't even able to see what the students were working on. It has been such a pleasure to watch and observe their creative process in class, even when they aren't ready to talk to me about what they are making.

My goal this school year is to get back to Teaching for Artistic Behaviors (TAB) and allowing the students to be artists and create art that is meaningful to them. (Click here to learn more about TAB.)

I adapted the Irving School "affirmations" and the students I and say them out loud at the beginning of each class.

  • I will grow as an artist.
  • I will exceed expectations.
  • I belong in the art studio.
I try to stress to students that they are ALL artists and everyone's art is unique to them. I want them to feel ownership over what they create and try not to compare or compete with other artists.

Take a look at the tabs above to see what each grade level has been working on in class. Also make sure to check out our school page on Artsonia to see all the amazing art the students have made.

Artsonia is a great tool for students to keep a record of the art they make throughout their time at Irving. We also use it for writing artist statements and sharing art with families. If you register your email address, you will receive an email each time your child publishes a new work of art. Feel free to email me with any questions!
