Green Team--Eco Art Contest

Irving's Green Team created an art piece for Oak Park's Eco-Art Contest. The students chose "Pollution" as the theme and used recycled materials to create an ugly polluted world as well as a lovely "green" world.

The artwork is now on display at The Oak Park Visitor's Center on Lake Street. Irving is just one of five schools who participated in the contest, so when you go to see the artwork, don't forget to vote for Irving to win!

The contest winner will be announced at Earth Fest on Saturday, April 20th. Click here for more information: http://www.oak-park.us/earthfest/index.html

4th Grade Houses on Display at Red Hen

As a part of Architect Adventure, 4th grade students had the opportunity to work with  local architects who volunteered to come in and teach them about different housing styles in Oak Park. Each student chose the style they liked the best and painted their own house on cardboard. The volunteers helped cut out the houses and put them on display in the window of Red Hen Bread in Oak Park.

Weaving

The second grade students are learning about weaving and making their own little blankets. We use pieces of cardboard as looms and the students were able to choose what size loom they wanted to work with, the bigger the loom, the larger the blanket will be. They all learned the over-under pattern needed to weave the weft yarn through the vertical warp threads.
Some students chose to work together with a partner on one of the larger looms.

The loom is only needed as the base for weaving, once the weaving is complete, the students can take it off the cardboard and bring it home.
This student used mostly fabric to do his weaving and already finished!
